![]() ![]() Later in life, after years of imprisonment, Sade would become very fat, having gorged himself on the privileges offered to rich and titled prisoners of the time. When he removed his hat, the whores noted that he was rather handsome, full-faced, and blond. ![]() An épée hung at his side, a hunting knife at his belt. One of his biographers, Neil Schaeffer, describes the scene: Next to his lanky and somewhat comical valet, the much shorter Sade sported a plumed hat, a gray frock-coat with blue lining, and marigold-colored silk pants and vest. In an account from a tryst in these years with four prostitutes, Sade had his valet decked out in a nautical costume (they were in Marseille), while he himself was in attractive finery. The pencil drawing by Charles-Amédée Van Loo is of Sade in his early twenties, his head in profile, his eyes over his long sharp nose looking intently, his mouth in a mild pout. There is only one known surviving image of the Sade and only a handful of accounts. ![]()
